Common (Under)ground
What makes art important? Explore the unconventional and unique styles of pop surrealism in this lively exhibition. Lowbrow or Pop Surrealist art stems from the “retro” style of comics, graffiti, and even punk music. Accessibility is the key to this art movement, which originally emerged in the mid-20th century. It commonly has a very cheerful or sarcastic tone as it juxtaposes varying relevant symbols. Initially not thought to be intellectual enough for art galleries, pop-surreal works operated outside of the art world. Today, they are becoming more and more relevant as images are widely distributed. In this show, we present Ohio artists that delve into a mix of cultural symbols and inspire us to look at things a little differently.
